University of Michigan | Master of Social Work

Introduction:

I received my Master of Social work degree from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor in 2022 where my focus of concentration was Welfare of Children and Families, with a School Social Work certificate. While working towards my degree I completed my field practicum at Wolverine Human Services, that housed a residential, short term shelter, and a Juvenile Justice Program. I, alongside a clinical treatment team and staff, provided crisis management, case management, and group counseling to young males ages 9-17. Additionally, I completed a field practicum in a charter school in Detroit, Michigan. School staff, and myself worked to create a socio-emotional environment for students in grades kindergarten to 8th grade. This included groups centered around grief and loss, creativity, individuality and emotional regulation. Since 2022 I have been working full time as a psychiatric social worker serving children and acute adults struggling with mental health, in areas including but not limited to self-harm, suicidality, depression, anxiety, ADHD, ADD, and behavioral disorders.

Approach:

My approach is client-centered and solution-focused and utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. CBT is based on the core principles that psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking and learned patterns of unhelpful behavior, and that people can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives.
